Every so often a show comes along that completely shatters all possible expectations. And I have to be honest here, the expectations for Eliot Sumner's performance at The New Vintage were set pretty high. Information has quickly become one of my favorite records of the year, the rare album that slays from start to finish. There is not a single track that drags. Even with the high bar, Eliot completely managed to surpass my expectations. And it may be partly due to just growing up in such a cool family- when your dad is Sting there is just something inherently cool and hip about you. The family aura just exudes from Eliot, in a similar fashion to seeing Sean Lennon play at Zanzabar a few years back. But cool only gets you so far. What took the performance to such a high level were the quality of the songs; which sound just as good if not better than the record, and passion for the performance. You could tell the band was genuinely excited to play the show and even a little humbled by the crowd size. Eliot remarked that she had some concern about playing a show on a weeknight in Louisville. To her surprise the city rolled out the red carpet. Mayor Greg Fisher invited the band to play his monthly performance series before taking them out to a dinner prepared by Chef Edward Lee. There was mutual admiration between the band and the city. Hell the mayor even showed up for the evening's performance. Enough of my gushing on about the evening.
